Winkler Arts and Culture Inc. is a volunteer organization whose mission is focused on providing opportunities to share art in its various forms while celebrating the culture that brings art alive. Winkler Arts and Culture is dedicated to providing opportunities to teach, share and celebrate artistic and cultural expression, through education, programs and a community space.
The adaptive reuse of the decommissioned City of Winkler water treatment plant preserves a local landmark while providing a working facility for the Winkler Arts and Culture Centre. The Winkler Arts and Culture group had been operating in the community without adequate facilities to support their program goals for a number of years, and through a significant fundraising effort and an agreement with the City of Winkler to make the unused structure available for their use, the project was made possible. The new facility preserves the industrial character of the existing structure and includes multiple gallery spaces, flexible retail spaces, studios, classrooms, administrative offices and washroom facilities. The existing industrial structure presented many accessibility challenges, including large concrete curbs for decommissioned holding tanks. The construction of a new raised gallery floor, ramp, new stairs and a vertical platform lift delivered a barrier-free amenity for the entire community.
Phase one of the master plan is complete with fundraising continuing in an effort to execute future phases that will renovate the 1980s addition to the east for phase two and create a new addition to the building for phase three.
